About:

The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe (“UMUT,” or “Tribe”) is a leader in climate-resilient management of water and natural resources in the Southwestern United States. Our team is proud of the climate resilience work we have done to date, and the engagement of our cultural leaders to finalize the 2019 Climate Report. On the UMUT Nation (located in southwestern Colorado, southeastern Utah, and northwest New Mexico) the Tribe manages nearly 600,000 acres of tribal trust land, six tribal ranches, and significant water rights and water infrastructure systems across three states. The Tribe has two ongoing water settlement negations in New Mexico and Utah. The focus of the New Mexico negotiation is tribal development of renewable energy and a community. As the focus in Utah is community engagement with allottees, access to clean surface water, and improvements to the community water infrastructure, and future cultural mapping (which we plan to secure philanthropic funding for). Along these lines, the Tribe also in the midst of developing its water right portfolio along with securing other water rights in project such as Sweetwater, the pumpback storage project, Community and Climate Resiliency Project, and studying the Feasibility of its Federal Reserved Water Rights in Colorado.
